I have read that at the time, the federal government’s revenue was all from customs and duties of which over 80 percent were collected in the port of New Orleans. Secession would have meant the loss of this revenue. Believing that wars are fought for money and power, not human rights as Lincoln purported, I found this plausible. Welcoming your thoughts
