If you follow some of the Medium wars between publications, there seem to be camps.

A group of writers from certain publications all adopt these hacks to boost readership in non-writing ways and other more purist publications refuse to add writers from publications that do so.

It's getting quite personal in some instances with accusations of plagiarism thrown in for good measure.
