There has been a crisis of faith about Medium since the last algorithm change. The foundational contributors who made the platform what it is and grew to rely on it for their livelihood had their incomes reduced by as much as 70%. What message does that send?
As a result, many no longer believe that Medium is the platform in which to place our best writing.
And no, I won't stake my livelihood on the whims of an algorithm. Nor did I join to sell subscriptions or beg readers for donations.
The writing seems to be descending into social media posts as opposed to essays, experiences or philosophical expression.
Newsbreak already compensates reliably for its brand of local journalism. Vocal has cash contests. What does Medium have?
If I ask myself honestly, I am still around out of loyalty to the members who have supported my writing. I am already seeking greener pastures for my best writing because I no longer believe this is the place to get recognized and compensated for it.
Please convince me I'm wrong. While you're at it , how about a spell check/editor for the comment section?
