There has been talk of China, Russia and the larger opec countries forming a currency union around the silk road trade region. This is largely to avoid the possibility of US sanctions through the SWIFT system.
Obviously this would dwarf a naked US dollar save for the US to peg its currency to something tangible like gold. This is the stuff that world wars are fought over.
