Undoubtedly the teaching profession is bearing the brunt of many societal problems far beyond the scope of education.
There are a few problems however with getting out of the homework business. Whether we like it or not, other countries with whom we are in competition do not share an antipathy to homework. While I do not have hard data at my disposal, it is my belief that North America lags Asia in STEM academic performance.
The skill of doing homework is an essential one for most pursuits in postsecondary education.
If the public school system bans homework it will be leveling the playing field to the lowest common denominator. This will drive the best resourced families to the private system thereby starving the public system financially and creating an unequal playing field of another kind.
There are no easy answers to household inequality. Ideally the public system would serve both those best inclined to academia as well as the trades.
