Is it too early to say that our society was unprepared for the Covid 19 pandemic? If so, my apologies but I’m saying it anyway. To understand why, you have to probe the political nature of the pandemic response.
To have been prepared for the pandemic would mean society wide prepping. While prepping for financial collapse and societal breakdown has been gaining traction in the general population, it is still portrayed as the fringe pursuit of crazies.
After all, wouldn’t society wide prepping signal a lack of confidence that our leaders Have Everything Under Control? No politician would dare.
Prepping means investing in the preparation for something that might happen, not one that necessarily will. Our political system, however, is geared toward spending on things that are visibly and tangibly beneficial both in practical and economical utility. How many millions or billions are we going to spend on something that might never happen? Elected officials can’t get political mileage out of something voters can’t see, touch, use or spend.
